Quality Comics Group from PS Artbooks

BLACK CONDOR & THE RAY Volume 1
Collects Black Condor in Crack #1-11 and The Ray from Smash #14-22, both from 1940-41. Our Highest Recommendation. Featured here is story after story by the legendary Lou Fine, one of the most impressive and influential artists to ever work in comics. His fluid figures were admired and copied by such greats as Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. In the early 40's, the heyday of the Golden Age, he worked at Quality Comics along with such greats as Reed Crandall, Jack Cole and Will Eisner and in addition to his impressive covers, he worked on such comics as the Black Condor and created The Ray. Also here: Will Eisner, Otto Binder, John Cassone, Charles Sultan, John Belfi and Rudy Palais, all superior artists working on two of Quality's strongest feature characters. THE SPIRIT Volume 2 Hardcover
Collects #5-8, 1946-47. Highly Recommended. By Will Eisner, Lou Fine and Jack Cole. These stories collected in The Spirit's first comic book series are all from the war years. Eisner had been drafted, so back at home, Lou Fine, Jack Cole and others of the Quality Comics staff were drawing each of the 8-page stories. Writers Manly Wade Wellman and Bill Woolfolk are credited for most of these 1944-45 stories, though Eisner may have also stepped in occasionally. Art was primarily by Quality's two best: Lou Fine (with a simplified style) and Jack Cole, both trying to emulate Eisner rather than their own styles. From straight crime drama and noir to lighthearted adventure, from mystery and horror to comedy and love stories, these often had hybrid elements that twisted genre and reader expectations. DOLL MAN Volume 2
Collects #4-6, 1942-43. Highly Recommended. Dollman has been eclipsed in our modern age by Ant-Man from Marvel and The Atom from DC. But in the Golden Age, he was the first and the very best diminutive hero. Quality assigned their best artists to him: Lou Fine, Reed Crandall to his earliest adventures in Feature Comics. His co-stars included the lovely fiancee of his alter ego, Martha, and her scientist father. By force of will, he could shrink to 12 inches high, but retain his full size strength. He was awarded his own 64-page title, and again fine artwork was the norm, by Al Bryant and Rudy Palais in particular. These issues featured many Dollman stories, with just one backup feature, wartime adventurer Dragon, drawn by the stylish Fred Guardineer. PS Artbooks, 2024....More.

BLACKHAWK Volume 11
Collects #55-59, 1952. Highly Recommended. Reed Crandall is at his prime here, with all the covers and nearly all the stories. Chop Chop stars in the backup feature by Paul Gustafson. Outrageous war weapons are the order of the day, with the iconic War Wheel just the beginning. We also have the lovely "Spider of Delanza," King Cobra returns, Armored Men, Termite Tanks, Slavery in Siberia, "The Red Tomorrow" and the sci-fi tale, "Beachhead on Asteroid X." These are the wild high flying, two-fisted stories that made Blackhawk a bestseller in the 1950s and one of the very, very few hero comics to make it from the Golden Age all the way into the Silver Age without a break. MILITARY COMICS Volume 6

Superlative Blackhawk lead-off stories by Crandall, plus lots of backup features like Death Patrol, Destroyer 171, The Sniper (carrying the fight to Hitler himself, in Europe), Private Dogtag, PT Boat and Secret War News (true stories of Naval Flying Aces) — everyone was on the warfront battling Nazis and Japan. IBIS THE INVINCIBLE Volume 1
Reprints issues #1-3, 1942-45. Recommended. By Mac Raboy et al. Fawcett Comics, the home of Captain Marvel, created their own feature magician: Ibis the Invincible. He began as a long-running backup feature in CM's own Whiz Comics and then graduated to what you see here, his own title, and picked up a lovely companion, Taia. It lasted for six issues from 1942 to 1948. He wields the awe-inspiring power of the Ibistick, a magical artifact that grants him extraordinary abilities. This features artwork by none other than the best at Fawcett, Mac Raboy. Backup strips include work by Dave Berg, Basil Wolverton, Pete Costanza. Writers Otto Binder and William Woolfolk crafted many of the stories here. PS Artbooks, 2024....More.

WEB OF MYSTERY Volume 1
Collects #1-6, 1951. Recommended. Art by Lou Cameron, Gene Colan, Mike Sekowsky et al. Here comes the first volume of Ace Comics' horror title, one that I personally like quite a bit. Artist Lou Cameron is here and Mike Sekowsky, strongly influenced by Alex Toth, my favorite period for him. Stories include "The Vampire's Weird Duel," "Valley of the Mayan Goddess," "The Menace That Stalked Brooding Cunliffe," "Rendevous with the Phantom Gypsies," and "Stalked by a Nameless Dread." Artist Jack Katz puts in an appearance in "Vengeance of the Undead," and there's a great femme fatale tale, "The Lorelei of Loon Lake," "Ghost Ship of the Caribbean," and "The Case of the Beckoning Mummy." TALES OF HORROR Volume 1
Collects #1-5, 1952-53. Recommended. Art by Myron Fass, Pete Morisi, A.C. Hollingsworth et al. Toby Press was a small but respectable comics publisher which also used the imprint Minoan; they put out one issue of Tales of Terror, then got hit by a cease-and-desist order from E.C., who had used that title for their annuals (don't worry, that particular issue will be coming later on). Toby dropped that and started over with Tales of Horror, which ran for 13 issues. Toby may be the only comics publisher to swipe the urbane and cynical stories of John Collier, rather than relying on Poe, Lovecraft, and the like. But there's still lots of pre-code horror here, monsters, giant bugs, demons, all the fun themes. PS Artbooks, 2024....More.

GOLDEN HOUR THE ART OF RAIDE
Highly Recommended. The debut art book from popular German digital illustrator Raide, now a widely viewed online creator. "As a child, I vividly remember watching animated movies and being pulled into their colorful stories. Spirited Away, Fantasia, Aladdin, and Corpse Bride were some of my favorites..." Professional work includes covers for the popular Percy Jackson books and the School for Good and Evil series. Go behind-the-scenes into the artist’s creative process, including stunning portraits and whimsical scenes. Driven by her passion for character art, Raide has collaborated with big industry names such as Clip Studio Paint, XP-Pen, Huion, and Harper Collins. Fans will also know that Raide creates popular online art courses on Domestika. Here are brand-new tutorials and studies that focus on some of her many artistic strengths, such as lighting and expression, lovely fantasy women and surreal scenes. SKY MASTERS OF THE SPACE FORCE: The Complete Sunday Strips in Color
New Edition. Our Highest Recommendation. By Jack Kirby and Wally Wood. The Sky Masters of the Space Force newspaper strip is one of the most fascinating and obscure works by comics legend Jack Kirby. Created and developed by Kirby with writer Dave Wood at the beginning of 1958 while Kirby was working for National (DC), the Sky Masters daily strip debuted on September 8 of that year. Five months later, on February 8, 1959, the color Sunday strips arrived featuring a totally independent story line from the dailies. The strip narrates, with a realistic approach, the adventures of Major Sky Masters during the early days of space exploration in the late 1950s, just as a new front opened in the Cold War between the U.S. and U.S.S.R.: a frenzied space race. Jack Katz First Kingdom Documentary

I’m doing an interview for this next week. It celebrates the career of Jack Katz (now 96 and still kicking), from his work as a Golden Age artist, through the Atlas years working for Stan Lee as a penciller, to his ten-year, 24 issue epic, The First Kingdom (1974-86)…and beyond. He went on to painting and teaching and more comic book projects, and The First Kingdom has been frequently collected. A book on Jack is due here any day now, which artist Liam Sharp put together with him.

To celebrate all this, I’ve pulled out my own publisher copies of several of the back issues I had put aside years ago, including the very first printing (of four) of issue #1, with the painted cover which was dropped in favor a newly colored cover for 2nd printings onward. Watch for these on Free Comic Book Day, starting at the end of April for us, May 4th for the brick-and-mortar comic shops. As always, we will include some free warehouse finds and some vintage titles for sale.

We’re down to the last three of my file copies of the signed First Kingdom Portfolio from 1982, limited to 999. I published this, as well as issues #4-24 of the series (my stores Comics & Comix published the first three issues). The portfolio comes with a free copy of the painted cover first printing of issue #1 mentioned above [FKPT. $125].
